After completing my education at Deutsche Bundesbahn, I took up a position as a technician at the IBM storage systems plant Mainz in 1984. In the area of factory planning and operation, I've made my first experience with the entire life cycle of buildings. From plant design, planning, construction and operation to value retention measures and dismantling projects. My main area of responsibility included maintenance and 24/7 fault service for the electrical supply from 20KV systems to the supply of production facilities. I specialized in the operation of access control systems and two years later took over responsibility for the building automation of the entire IBM Mainz site, the largest European plant for storage technology.
In 1996, the plant's building operations, including production-related systems such as water treatment, wastewater treatment, chemical supply and disposal, electrical supply, compressed air, heating, cooling and air conditioning, building automation, safety systems, security technology, security, cleaning and outdoor facilities, were outsourced to the service provider Zander Gebäudemanagement (now Apleona). At the time, this was the largest outsourcing contract in Europe. As a result, the number of employees was massively reduced, combined with the contractual requirement to save 30% of the previous costs (from IBM) on the basis of an open book arrangement. Through a voluntary transfer to the facility management company, I took on my first management position as a service provider and was responsible for three teams: Controlling/Helpdesk, Electrical Supply and Building Automation. Two years later, I was appointed Facility Manager with site responsibility. From this point onwards, I had overall responsibility for the uninterrupted operation of technical, commercial and infrastructural FM, with 6 departments, around 70 employees and over 100 suppliers, while adhering to the SLA and budget targets.
From this point on, I began to combine my passion for personnel management and development with complex technical processes, always with a focus on people. Various milestones in my professional career prove that my expertise is focused on continuously developing innovative solutions, expanding and passing on knowledge and building and leading teams and departments. After IBM ceased production in Europe in 2003, the Mainz production campus was transformed into an industrial park where I was able to win several clients with my team and managed them to their utmost satisfaction as FM site manager for over 3 years before I took on the role of regional manager for IBM Germany Central and was able to accompany IBM's realignment with the construction of two state-of-the-art Tier 4 data centers in Eschborn and Oberursel, among other things. I was responsible for setting up the operating teams and the entire best practices and process-related workflows. This resulted in a close connection to the company headquarters in Armonk/USA. In addition to establishing a Center of Competence (COC) for the countries and regions D/A/CH, CEE, MEA as a central support function with the divisions Occupational Health & Safety, Data Centers & Critical Facilities, IT, Art, Security and the management over two years, I moved to the company headquarters in 2013 and established/managed an international CoC within the Bilfinger Group (now Apleona).
This function led to the international “Data Center Solutions” business unit with the divisions, CoC, Projects and Operations, which I was responsible for managing until 2021.
In 2022, I moved to NTT Global Data Centers and set up an EMEA Training Academy. I then moved to Vantage Data Centers, a young, fast-growing hyperscaler with four locations in Germany, where I was able to help shape the start-up and had overall responsibility for personnel and costs.
I have always pursued the promotion and development of young talent with enthusiasm and pleasure. Through various collaborations with universities of applied sciences, colleges and universities, I was able to supervise a large number of bachelor's and master's theses and contribute to new study concepts such as the “Data Center Master Class” with a university in Ireland. Ultimately, the investment in education and support programs paid off by developing high-quality and reliable products, enabling us to win and inspire many international customers.
