The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) adopts the definition from the ISO 41000:2017 guideline and defines FM as an organizational function that integrates people, places and processes into the built environment to improve the quality of life of people and the productivity of the core business.
The German Facility Management Association (GEFMA) defines facility management in the guideline GEFMA 100-1:2004 as follows: Facility management (FM) exclusively covers the life cycle phase of operation and is limited to the areas of space management, technical, infrastructural and commercial FM. FM refers to the entire life cycle of a building and includes the design, planning, construction, operation and utilization or dismantling of the building. FM also includes strategic planning and compliance with normative requirements.
